Sciatica: The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back; goes down the back of the leg to the foot. This nerve can become trapped between a herniated disc or compressed by the piriformis muscle. The piriformis muscle runs from the sacrum across the buttock to the top of the outer thigh. The saciatic nerve runs just under the piriformis muscle. If this muscle becomes tight it compresses the sciatic nerve, which is a common cause of sciatica.

If this happens it can cause pain in the lower back, buttock, hip, down the back of the thigh, outside of the leg and down to the foot.The pain is most often felt while sitting, walking or straightening the leg. Also, if the psoas muscle become tight it can twist the lower spine and pinch the sciatic nerve which can cause pain.
